Description: Colombia is a country with a highly varied topography, but more than half of the country is in mountainous areas. In many parts of the country, transportation is scarce, which has made the bicycle a very popular means of getting around, as it is fast and economical. The bicycle, as a means of transportation, is especially popular in the mountains, where most of the “escarabajos” (professional Colombian cyclists, specialists in climbing mountains) come from. The “escarabajos” are born and raised in mountains with altitudes exceeding two thousand meters above sea level (where oxygen levels are lower, and the body becomes accustomed to managing oxygen more efficiently). From a young age, they develop the ability to climb naturally. For them, climbing is part of their life. Rigo’s motto is: “No matter how many times we fall, what matters is that we always get back up. “…winning is something that is different for each person. It’s not always about coming in first. For many, just finishing, even if it’s last, is a very important triumph. We can’t judge a book by its cover, or a person by a prize (or lack thereof). Each of us is running our own race, and the circumstances of each specific life make the path that each person has to travel different.”
