SUMMARY When Sofía and Gabriel become a couple, everyone thinks they are perfect for each other—everyone except Daniela. She feels sick every time she sees them together, convinced that she should be Gabriel’s girlfriend, not Sofía. Desperate, Daniela turns to the town’s healer, asking for help with her magic. The healer refuses, insisting that no magic can break the love between two people. Obsessed, Daniela seeks the assistance of a powerful shaman. But as her obsession grows, it sets in motion a chain of events that leads to a tragedy for Sofía and Gabriel. What dark consequences will arise from her relentless pursuit, and can love truly withstand the forces of obsession?

Written as an easy Level 3 novella for Spanish learners, this book employs simple grammatical structures in various past tenses, with some present subjunctive, touches of future and conditional, and plenty of repetition. It contains approximately 290 family words and 43 cognates, telling a captivating 6,740-word story. A full glossary is included at the end of the book, along with illustrations for each chapter. Additionally, challenging vocabulary is highlighted and accompanied by footnotes with translations on the same page.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: One day, while chatting with my good friends in California, I mentioned pink dolphins. They were surprised, and one jokingly remarked, “I thought pink dolphins were something fantastical, like unicorns or something.”

As an author of books for Spanish learners, I realized it would be a great idea to write a story featuring these fascinating creatures—a small contribution to help people learn that they truly exist.

Having been born and raised in Ecuador, I know that these animals are endemic to the Amazon rivers and are currently endangered.

There’s a legend that on full moon nights, pink dolphins transform into handsome men who seduce young women. I decided to craft a magical realism story inspired by this legend, but with a completely different perspective.

I created a love story infused with elements of enchantment, fantasy, and mystery, set in an Amazon town—a land of jaguars where canoes are a common means of transportation, and floating in the river to spot pink dolphins is an everyday possibility. It’s a place where people have a deep respect for traditional knowledge, healers, and shamans.

When I am in the Amazon, I am struck by its vibrant life. The Amazon always sounds, smells, and feels different from the city. I wanted to weave this rich environment into my story, offering a striking contrast to a typical urban setting.
